86% of software used in Pakistan is pirated costing some $ 278mn to the original software makers

Software Piracy is gaining pace in the developing countries, especially in Asia, where PC (Personal Computer)penetration is increasing among individual and companies who pay for the hardware either new or used but do not like to pay for the software.

According to the latest report released by Business Software Alliance (BSA) showing statistics of software piracy in 2011, 86% of software used in Pakistan is pirated costing some $ 278mn to the original software makers - a value 122% higher than total pirated software used in 2007 that cost $125mn.

Overall, the global piracy rate for PC software hovers at 42% with value climbing from $58.8bn in 2010 to $63.4bn in 2011.

In 2011, BSA recorded that piracy of software remained highest in the developing countries as 56% of new computers sold last years were shipped to developing countries. The study reveals that Asia is topping the piracy costing $21bn in lost sales. The overall piracy rate in Asia is 60%

Globally, China is on number 2 in the software piracy. Last year it had to bear a loss of $9bn from the pirated software whereas, in United States, $10bn went into drain in 2011 as a result of pirated software.

The study shows that frequent pirates install 55% more pirated programs on their PCs than infrequent and non-pirates.

On one hand, software piracy lowers the revenues considerably to the software makers as well the governments, and on the other hand, it has decreased the prospects of new jobs overall in the IT industry.

The report says, the only way to reduce the software piracy is to strengthen the IP laws and educate the software users.

QMobile E850 is another low end mobile which focuses on the mass market. E850 boasts a touch screen, FM Radio, Dual SIM, a decent design and supports two active SIMs at once

QMobile E850 is another low end mobile which focuses on the mass market. E850 boasts a touch screen, FM Radio, Dual SIM, a decent design and supports two active SIMs at once. It is an affordable device with attractive features which youngsters would love to have in their pockets.

Unboxing

QMobile E850 has a compact box in which the accessories and other goodies are packed nicely. Here are its contents:

QMobile E850 Handset

Manuals

MicroUSB Cable

Charger (to be used with cable)

Hands free

Build & Design

The QMobile 850 features a resistive 2.8” TFT QVGA touch screen, there are only three buttons on the front side of the phone. The overall build of the phone is quite reasonable for its price tag but the back cover seems to be a bit low on quality. Coming back to the description, a speaker is present on the top of the front which sits just over the 2.8” touch screen. QMobile logo is printed in silver color just under the screen. Three buttons lie under the logo in horizontal alignment; the central button takes the UI to menu and helps navigate while the buttons at right and left are for hanging up/ turning phone on/ off and calling respectively. A thin slit for mic is the only other item on the front.

The back is pretty clean with VGA Camera on top right, speaker grill on top left and QMobile logo in white color on the right side of the grill. The right, left and bottom of E850 are completely empty while 3.5 mm audio jack port and microUSB port are on the top of the phone along with a slit to insert a band on the top right.

There is a big round key located just below the screen which works well as a track pad and can be pressed to return to home as well. On bottom of the front screen there is an ear piece and pinhole equipped with the mic.

QMobile E850 can be a bit difficult to handle as the plastic material used is pretty slippery, however, after using the phone for a couple of days you will get used to it. The back cover of the phone as well as the touch screen is prone to finger prints and a lot of effort is needed to clean these. It is recommended that you install a screen protector as soon as you take the phone out of the box.

The back cover can be slid downwards and then pulled up to open. Battery needs to be removed to insert microSD card and SIMs, the cover can be removed pretty easily. On removing the battery, you will see a QMobile sticker with IMEI number, model number and barcode on it. Two SIM card slots are aligned vertically on the left; the mcroSD card slot is present on the right.

User Interface

It is quite understandable that E850 has been targeted for youngsters switching from traditional candy bars to touch screen phones as the User Interface of QMobile E850 is intuitive and can be easily grasped even by those who have never used a touch phone before. The UI has similarities with the interface on QMobile E950.

There are 4 shortcuts at the bottom of the screen i.e. call, contacts, messages and menu. The main menu can easily be accessed from the bottom shortcuts or by pressing the central part of the navigation pad located just below the screen.

It was extremely tough to use the touch screen when we received the phone but the screen response became quite reasonable after calibrating the screen. Navigating through track pad is quite easy and convenient. The response and performance of the touch screen is quite impressive if we look at the price of the phone but you will take some time to get used to it as it takes a harder tap than other resistive screens we have used. The quality of graphics and colors is pretty reasonable keeping in mind the price tag of the phone.

The menu has been divided in two screens by default where different applications are displayed. For using internet there is a built-in web browser which performs well as expected. This device comes preinstalled with a lot of internet dependent “QApps” Facebook, Yahoo, MSN, Twitter, Ebuddy and Google Search while there is only one pre-installed game called Magic Sushi. The apps mentioned previously are browser-based versions of popular social networking sites and IM suite (Ebuddy), Facebook worked particularly well and no problem was faced in updating status and viewing FB wall. Having such a wide array of apps on board makes it a fully equipped device to be used for hours and hours. These applications will keep you connected with your friends and family using your QMobile E850.

Connectivity

QMobile E850 features Edge, Bluetooth and MicroUSB port; hence there are ample connectivity options available. The data cable can be used to charge the phone as well as to connect it in mass storage mode to a computer. Using GPRS on E850 is as easy as it gets, we were able to use GPRS without having to enter any settings manually as the phone recognized the SIM and configured the settings itself, which was pretty impressive considering the fact that low-end touch screen phones rarely have this feature. If you face any problems in configuring your handset, you can go to the QMobile website and find details settings to configure your phone.

The call quality is quite amazing on this device. You can easily browse through your contact list and make calls. The phone allows two active SIMs at a time, however when a SIM is on a call, the other SIM returns “out of reach” message when called.

Multimedia

QMobile E850 has a VGA camera at the back which captures pretty reasonable photos for its specifications. Conditions with lesser light have a great effect on the camera. The snaps taken can easily be transferred to desktop or can be sent as an MMS or transferred through Bluetooth. The camera is unfortunately opened by default in Camcorder mode whenever it is opened, it can be switched to Camera mode by simply pressing the on-screen shortcut for the purpose. There is no dedicated camera button; hence snaps are taken by pressing the central part of the navigation pad. An image can be shared as soon as it is shot by choosing “Send To: option which allows the image to be shared via Bluetooth.

E850 has a basic image viewer, but there is no option to share an image while it is opened, an image can be shared via Bluetooth when it is closed by going into options. Unfortunately, only one snap at a time can be shared via BT, batch sending is not allowed. We listened to some songs on our E850 and were impressed with performance of the speaker; however listening to songs with the handsfree makes a positive difference. The sound quality of E850 is surprisingly better than that of E950.

Conclusion

QMobile E850 is a low-end touch screen phone which should be considered for buying for youngsters who want to quit their old candy bars and switch to a social networking enabled touch screen phone but have a strict budget to stick to. The dual-SIM functionality is pretty suitable for the Pakistani market as most of the people own more than one SIM.

PROS

2.8” QVGA touch screen

Good build quality

Intuitive UI

Nice Design

Preloaded internet apps including Twitter, Facebook etc.

3.5 mm jack

Bluetooth

FM Radio

CONS

Touch screen response not the best

Body is prone to finger prints

Below par camera quality

No dedicated camera button

Nokia today launched lower end mobile phones Nokia 110 and Nokia 112. Both the mobile phones are cheaper with all the modern day features

Nokia team launching the mobile phones

After much hype, speculations and curiosity, today we witnessed another Dual SIM mobile phones series from Nokia – Nokia 110 and Nokia 112. Earlier, it was rumored that 305 and 311 were the models that were going to be launched from Pakistan.

Apart from all the glamorous performances by teams of models, the launch was different this time in a sense that unlike past, Nokia introduced these mobile phone globally from Pakistan. The first lot of these feature rich cheap phones is expected to hit the mobile market in a weeks time.

Nokia 110 and 112 belong to lower end mobile phones bracket with a price range of 3,500 to 4,000. The uniqueness of the mobile phones is that both the models support internet and all the latest social media applications including facebook and twitter. Other than this, these phones offer the following;

Support internet, fast browsing and fast compression of data while giving up to 90% less data compression

Nokia 110 has 40 games of worth 75 Eur already built-in

Video capture and playback

Imaging optimization for sharing

Music Player and FM Radio

Easily Swap Dual SIM

Whereas the big brother Nokia 112 is a little high in specs.

While feeling the heat from Chinese mobile phones including QMobile, MegaGate and rest of the lower end phones that are available at much cheaper rates in Pakistani mobile market, Nokia has decided to respond in the same manner with some quality products equipped with all the latest features that customer want s today.

While giving the presentation at the launch event, Imran Khalid Mehmood, Vice President, Near East Nokia Corporation said that it is the matter of pride for Pakistan that handsets (mobile phone) are being launched from this country on a global level.

“Nokia wants to connect next billion through the younger population of Pakistan. Last year, Nokia sold some 339,800,000 devices worldwide that makes the 931,000 phones per day and 11 mobile phones per second,” he added.

There are still 3.2 billion people on earth who don’t have a mobile phone. Some 1.6 mn are data connectable and neary 1.2Obn are connected with data, 1.6 have data connectable devices and some 1.2 bn have no data options

Focusing on the Symbian and its future he further said that “there are 675 mn S40 Nokia phones sold worldwide so far and Nokia store is driving 13 mn download per day. More than 30% Nokia Store download requests come from S40 series”

Nokia wants to connect next billion from Pakistan and for which it will keep investing in the data enabled mobile phones at lower and middle end price range.

Few of the performances are seen below;

Before Nokia attack the market with its whole range of Windows phones, it is still making efforts to revive its S40 system and this may turn out to be true today, as the rumors are, that Nokia may launch S40 based 311 and 305 touch phones from Pakistan. Mynokiablog.com has been leaking information on these handsets for last couple of days.

It claims that OS has been upgraded a little to give Nokia lovers a little taste of Android phones. And like N9 it can do all the swipe thing from left to right and what Nokia is introducing this time is top to bottom swipe for showing notification on the homescreen.

Both of them are full touch phones and were spotted first on a Chinese forum. Below are the pictures from mynokiablog.com that provide a little more info about phones unless they are in hands finally as Nokia is conducting a first ever global launch of its mobile phones from Pakistan with an aim to connect next billion.

HTC One X is the ultimate smartphone equipped with powerful quad-core processor with almost all possible connectivity options. The device is slim, sleek and stylish

HTC is back with a real game changer after releasing devices like HTC Explorer to capture the mass market. It seems that going back to the drawing board and making an effort to produce a device of the highest quality has been successful. HTC One X is in a league of its own, there is no device available in the market which can even aim to challenge the monster.

HTC One X is the first quad-core device released in the Pakistani market and is exclusively launched by Mobilink.

Unboxing

HTC has gone green with the environmental friendly box of HTC One X. The box is a white cube with rounded edges and a removable paper cover slides aimlessly to hold the box together. Packaging has been made from eco-friendly material which can be recycled and shows the environmental concern from the Taiwanese manufacturer. Printing on the packaging has been done with an environmental friendly ink.

Despite being eco-friendly, the box in particular and the packaging in general is unspectacular to say the least. We didn’t expect that a black coloured phone will be unleashed from a white coloured package which neither goes with the theme of the phone nor with the ‘X’ in the name of device. Hence we felt a bit awkward when unboxing the phone and witnessing a terrible mix-up from HTC.

The box contains standard contents, which are:

HTC One X

Hands free

Data cable (which can be plugged in the charger)

Charger

User manuals

Build & Design

With HTC One X, HTC has taken a few bold steps in designing their phones. The phone cannot be termed as having a traditional HTC design while the sheer slimness and weightlessness of the device takes it to an entirely different level. The brilliant polycarbonate body adds to the first impression made by the phone as it offers a firm grip and the build of the phone seems solid, it seems dropping it a few times won’t hurt it much. (Try at your own risk!)

The front consists of tiny dots at the top which are for speaker, on its right sits the 1.3 megapixel camera. A minutiae notification LED is hidden under the speaker which is just over the “HTC” logo which is right at top of the screen; there is a sensor on the left of the logo. The 4.7 inches Super IPS second-generation LCD capacitive screen takes most of the real estate available on the front under which three touch-sensitive controls i.e. Back, Home & Recent Apps are present.

Let’s start the back side from the bottom. FCC and some other symbols accompanied by some narration lie on the bottom which is just under the beats audio logo. Sandwiched between the beats audio logo and the regulatory logos are three lines of dots which undoubtedly is the loudspeaker grill. On the top right of the beats logo are five connector dots aligned vertically, which, in our opinion, resemble to those on HTC One X and thus we can safely expect a dock being released in a series of optional accessories later. However, a dock in the current packaging would have made this phone simply awesome.

HTC logo lies on the middle of the back side. On the top is a protruded camera with a single LED flash on its right while on its top-right is the micro-SIM card slot which is really a turnoff, the slot can only be opened by inserting a pin in a hole lying by its side. The camera on-board is an 8 megapixel autofocus sharpshooter which supports face detection and geo-tagging.

Top side of the phone has a 3.5mm slot and the power button while the bottom features nothing except a tiny hole for mic. The right and left side of the phone are exceptionally slim and are armed with a comfortable volume rocker and microUSB port respectively; there is nothing else present on the sides.

The protruded camera is a concern as when the device is placed on any surface, it gets direct contact with the surface, hence making it prone to increased scratches on the camera.

User Interface

HTC One X features the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) version 4.0.3 with HTC’s state of the art HTC Sense 4.0 UI. The lock screen consists of a ring which can be dragged anywhere on the screen to unlock the phone. Four shortcuts (which can be customized) on the lock screen can be dragged in the screen to go straight to that application and save precious time while on the go. On the top of the lock screen, time, date and network status is displayed.

There are seven screens present in the home by default, which can be customized as per requirement. Pinch gesture can be used to go to the helicopter view and view the screens together for re-arranging them, adding and even deleting panels. The Favorites shortcut is one of my favorite features as it brings together your favorite apps and thus decreases the clutter on your screen. App shortcuts can be dragged on each other to create folders, which are again really good in order to keep your screens clean.

On bottom of the screen 4 shortcuts with app drawer icon separating them are placed. App drawer displays all apps installed in the phone while pages can be flipped sideways if you have a large number of apps installed. App drawer has been further divided into three categories i.e. All, Frequent & Downloads which can be selected from the bottom.

The drop-down menu on the top of the home screen now features the settings icon as there is no touch sensitive control for this. Everything else remains the same. An additional “Dock Mode” option confirms our earlier assessment that a dock will later be released for HTC One X.

Screenshots of Interface

Calling

HTC One X boasts excellent call quality with no reception problems whatsoever. It supports both Smart Dialing and Voice dialing. Using the accelerometer the phone will stop ringing when turned over and loud speaker is automatically activated if phone is placed down during a phone call. The proximity sensor enables phone to use pocket mode which raises the ring volume when phone is in pocket or purse. Sense UI provides excellent integration between contacts from different social websites, it also synchronizes social updates and picture galleries with contacts, and you can filter contacts on basis of the origin of the contact.

There is no 3G video call out of the box, which does not affect us as we don’t have 3G in Pakistan. HTC custom keyboard is pretty easy to use and the dictionary can be customized to add Roman Urdu words and instantly churn texts in English as well as our national language.

Multimedia

HTC One X is equipped with 8MP camera with LED flash which is capable of taking snaps of resolution up to 3264×2448 pixels and shoots 1080p video @ 30fps. A lot of customization and effects are available for still picture and videos. HTC one X boasts a new feature which allows it to capture snaps while recording a video, this is also applicable when you are watching a movie, a simple tap on the relevant button will instantly save a screenshot in the Gallery.

The camera offers face detection, touch focus and autofocus but sadly dedicated hardware camera key is missing. Geo-tagging allows you u tag and upload pictures instantly on Facebook or flicker when connected with Wi-Fi. The picture quality could have been better and the video quality should have been better, a flagship phone should take better snaps than HTC One X. However, the speed with which a snap is taken and stored is incredible; it once again shows off the punch hidden in the slim and sleek One X

Misc

One X is as smooth as it gets, but use it for an hour or so with WiFi turned on, play a game with HD graphics or start taking some snaps, the result is a clearly over-heated One X which gets difficult to hold in your hand as the time passes by. We wonder it won’t be long before further problems associated with overheating are discovered.

We found that HTC One X battery lasts surprisingly long, it lasts for more than 24 hours of moderate usage but it’s performance can be expected to dwindle as time passes by.

Conclusion

HTC One X is the ultimate smartphone. Despite being surprisingly powerful due to the quad-core processor and having almost all possible connectivity options, the device is slim, sleek and stylish. HTC has done a good job with the build, design while keeping the weight of One X at bay. One X is the device for geeks, Tegra ensures exclusive access to games and the HD screen adds to the experience.

So, if you are a geek and love cutting edge technology or are looking to buy the ultimate smartphone and budget is not an issue, then HTC One X is the device to go for.

This is what sets HTC One V above its competitors. It has the latest software available from both Google and HTC, Android 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0

Since the One series came out in the market smartphone lovers have gone crazy and for good reason. The series is brilliant whether it is about performance or looks. With HTC One V we are just about ready to welcome the new darling in town.

Pros

Pretty strong connectivity and Wi-fi signals

Fantastic camera and effects for stills

Excellent UI

Very responsive and bright screen.

Cons

Single core

4 GB storage out of which only 1 GB remains with the user. (Does give you 25 GB free cloud storage and extendable upto 32 GB)

Design and Display:

The phone comes in an extremely unflattering package. Kind of like those trays they use at Hyperstar to sell off fried fish and other cooked food. Only the cling sheet was missing! However, after getting over the initial shock things get better. It packs one mobile set with the HTC ear phones, a charger and USB cable. It supports any signature beats audio head set as well.

The dimensions are 120.3 x 59.7 x 9.2 mm and weight is an appropriate 115 g. It’s slightly larger with a 3.7” screen, but thinner than its predecessor – the HTC Legend. It has a crisp display capable of showing 16 million colors. Above average sunlight legibility and viewing angles. The unibody aluminum chassis and sturdy casing, a hallmark of HTC comes as expected. It is a good looking phone if you keep in mind the price of the set which is half that of One S. The chin up at the bottom reminds you of the ultimate classic HTC Hero although the curve is slighter than that on Hero.

Calls and Messages:

The call quality is very good and there are no death grip issues unlike some other HTC phones. It also packs the standard set of accelerometer-based tricks. Finding a contact is easy even if you misspell it will find you the contact you are looking for.

Messaging is easy too; just switch to the landscape mode and the keypad would give you no trouble. There is also the option of speaking into the phone for texting but we advise you against using it especially if you want to save time. When we tried it, talk to me became tiffany, tell me became send me, stupid became cupid and you get the rest!

Operating System:

This is what sets HTC One V above its competitors. It has the latest software available from both Google and HTC, Android 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0. Stylish, suave and efficient!

It has five screens, you can pull the bottom ring to unlock or just drop a widget into the ring which takes you directly to the app represented by the widget.

The usual skin, wall papers especially live ones are all there as always with any HTC mobile. You have the settings shortcut on your notification panel so that when you want to for instance turn your wi-fi on or off all you have to do is pull your notification down and access settings from there All in all very charming and easy to use.

Applications and Multi media:

You name it! Social networking is covered by several apps and widgets, and there’s Gtalk, which can connect you to Google’s chat network and compatible networks too (like Ovi Chat). You have facebook, twitter, google + etc. It has got Polaris office to handle your PDF files, flash light and FM radio.

The music section takes the cake when it comes to apps on One V. It has four options like tune in radio and a few other apps but they only work if you have internet connectivity. The tune in radio has a list of options to choose from. It gives you news, music, talk, local radio etc. It also recommends channels and allows you to search by artist or genre and basically simplifies the whole process so that you can listen to just the kind of music you want without any hassles. Beats audio enhancements can be availed or not as required. And by the way it has excellent audio quality and keeps the standard even when you connect it to an external amplifier.

Plays videos upto 720 p very well and even supports medium heavy gaming so that games like angry birds are no more than trifle. You have GPS and with the help of HTC locations download the map of a country free for use offline. Although for some odd reason it lacks a digital compass. Browsing is excellent as well, pinch to zoom and scale to fit work like a charm. Flash comes pre installed so watching you tube videos or playing flash games is no cause for trouble at all.

Camera:

The HTC One V packs a 5MP camera that does stills of up to 2592 x 1944 pixels and records 720p video @ 30fps. There’s an LED flash / video light too.

The camera is just fantastic for stills. Group portraits are even more fun as it snaps multiple photos and for each face (and the One V can track many faces), the phone automatically picks the one where that person is smiling and hasn’t blinked. It even has HDR. Although it does lack a dedicated camera key which for some reason the makers seem to omit despite the huge demand for it! On the brighter side it does do away with the annoying clicking sound certain cameras make while snapping picture. Pressing down the shutter key for a while helps you take multiple photos, and then you can keep the best photo and delete the rest indicating how quick the camera is! Has some really cool effect too like vintage, depth, mono, sepia etc.

The One V records 720p video at 30fps and it can snap photos while doing so. 720p videos have a pretty low bitrate (about 5Mbps); some of the fine detail is sacrificed to achieve it. Colors are okay and the frame rate is smooth.

Battery:

It has a non removable battery which might irk some. However with Wi-Fi on 24/7 and FM playing for about two hours, a few calls totaling 30 minutes, an hour of angry birds and a little internet surfing will still leave you with enough battery to get through the day and you only have to charge it the next day.

Conclusion:

For all those who cannot afford to buy a smartphone that with given specifications can cost more than a laptop I cannot make a better recommendation! Buy it and you won’t regret the decision!

Cellular subscribers in Pakistan reached 118.316 million by the end of March 2012

The only sector growing in Pakistan is the cellular industry where some 8.62 million subscribers have been added during the first 9 months of fiscal year 2011-2012 from July 2011 to March 2012. The total subscriber base has reached to 118.316 million by March 2012.

According to PTA’s statistics, teledensity in the country at the end of 3rd quarter of FY 2011-2012 has reached 68.2 percent.

Although, number of activated SIMs are lesser than the total figure of subscriber base that PTA has released but according to watch dog, people prefer to keep multiple SIMs owing to various attractive call and SMS packages offered by all the cellular operators. Mobile phones with multi-SIM capability is helping new and existing customers keep number of SIMs at the same time.

Another phenomenon that has become the driving force for increase in cellular subscriber base despite of economic crunch is the penetration of cellular networks in the rural areas – a practice originally started by Telenor when it started operations in Pakistan – along with the availability of cheap Chinese mobile phones that have captured 50% of mobile phone market in Pakistan.

As the competition among cellular operators is increasing, it would be interesting to see how they perform the last quarter of the FY 2011-2012.

On average, some 0.95 million customers are being added every month and if trend remains the same, 2.85 million subscribers will be further added making total annual addition to 11.47 million.

Following is the chart showing the number of subscribers that each cellular operator is having as on March 2012.
