The process of distributing 125,000 laptop will start in the last week of January and by the end of March 2012 the process of laptop distribution will be completed among “Stars”, the word Shahbaz Sharif repeatedly used for the young winners of the laptops.
He was the guest of honor at ” How to stay safe online“, a function organized by Google Pakistan, P@SHA and Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) at IT Park, Lahore.
He also announced that Government of Punjab is all ready to start a dedicated IT university in Lahore. Initially, it’s campus will be opened in Lahore IT Park where a floor has been allocated for this purpose. Later, the university will be shifted to a much larger place, “Knowledge Park”, which is already reserved for this purpose on the Ring Road Lahore.
For establishing this university, Government of Punjab is partnering with top universities in the world, including Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA and Middle-east Technical University (METU), Turkey. This will be a start of new era of IT education, R&D and entrepreneurship in Pakistan, he added.
While talking about his Laptop Scheme, CM said, “Those who are blessed by Almighty Allah can afford a laptop or an iPad but millions of poor students who can barely pay their tuition fee have all the rights to study, innovate and become the future pillar of Pakistan. They need to be equipped with latest tools so that they only have to think about doing wonders for their country”.
Emphasizing on the future of Laptop Scheme, he further said that if he remains in power, he is all charged up to distribute half a million more laptops among the poor and deserving students of Punjab in the new financial year starting from July 2012.
He requested all the blogger and IT professionals sitting at the event to share their valuable recommendations for the accomplishment of IT goals that Government of Punjab has set.
Earlier, Jehan Ara, President of Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) highlighted couple of facts about IT industry of Pakistan.
